Capability procedures
Find out about adopting capability procedures and promoting an effective capability process.
Governing boards must establish capability procedures that apply when there is serious under performance which the appraisal process and management support have been unable to address.
Capability procedures should set out the possible outcomes arising from serious under performance. These can range from re-starting the appraisal process (if and when the under performance has been addressed) to issuing a written warning or dismissal.
In most cases, capability procedures are dealt with at line management level and so do not require the involvement of governing boards. However, there are exceptions where the board is required to take part in capability meetings.
Our capability procedures guidance for governing boards聽covers:
- adopting capability procedures
- the stages of the capability procedures
- taking part in capability meetings and appeals
- tips to help manage an effective process
